A 8-day trip in Northern Jamaica

Beautiful beaches, amazing food, great people, stunning jungle… an infinite range of descriptions can be used to represent this great Caribbean Island, so let me tell you about our roadtrip on the northern part of it!

We started the trip in Montego Bay, spending some hours after our landing at the Doctor’s Cave Beach, to get ready for our drive to Port Antonio (202 km-3h40). We woke up with a thunderstorm, but nevertheless we decided to contact a guide for rafting the Rio Grande. It turned out to be a great decision because the rain stopped but the sky was cloudy, so we did not get sunburnt (and the following day the river was flooding). The rafting is about 2,5 hrs long, and it is wonderful. After we completed the trip (where the draft got stuck on a rock, leaving a fun memory of trying to unstuck it), we went to the famous Blue Lagoon (65 m deep).

The following day, the sun finally decided to come out and we therefore went to visit the Frenchman’s Cove (9 km-22 min)and we were left speechless; not only we were almost alone, but you can also decide whether to swim in the sea or in the crystal clear river that flows into it. Amazing. In the afternoon, the weather became cloudy again, so we visited Port Antonio, and then drove to Ocho Rios (102 km-2h).

For the first day in Ocho Rios, we decided to go to the famous Bamboo Beach (6 km-7 min), a little touristic but great beach. Keep in mind, try to go there in the morning, because in the afternoon all the buses with tourists from cruises arrive and fill the place. We left and we went to the Blue Hole (12 km-20 min), where we jumped from a 6 mt tall cliff.

The following day we visited the Green Grotto Caves (31 km-35 min), nice but honeslty a little overpriced (in my opinion). After that we drove to Dunn’s River Fall (28 km-30 min), which are wonderful but give the amusement park vibes. we climbed the waterfall (it was extremely funny). Finally, we tried to see the famous Laughing Waters (better known as James Bond’s beach), but it is private property (lucky them!).

We spent our last day in Ocho Rios following the advice of a photographer we met, and we went looking for the Little Dunn’s River Falls. They are, as the name states, smaller, but no tourist was insight and they were as funny as the famous ones, and then we drove to Negril (177 km-3h15).

You may know Negril due to the 7-mile beach which is indeed a 7 mile beach (lol). We spent the first day just relaxing, and in the evening we went to Rick’s cafe, where people jump into the sea from a 21 mt cliff. We jumped from the 12 mt one, which was already enough! The following day we woke up early to scuba dive, and then we went to the public Bloody Bay Beach.

For our last day in Negril, we went to the Half Moon Beach (21 km-25 min), where we were the only humans (5 dogs were with us). It is great, and we also took a boat ride to a small island with a bar and restaurant on it! Unfortunately this was our stop before going back to Montego Bay (61 km-1h), where we left the following day.
